Hair Combing types

Combing and brushing are activities that can either occur concurrently with hair drying, as part of the styling process following hair drying, or for styling purposes in between hair cleansing.
There are a huge variety of combs and brushes on the market, each designed with a specific purpose.

Benefits of using a Comb :

There are two primary functions for using a comb:
To help separate and detangle the individual hairs so that brush can reach the scalp to release the sebum, stimulate blood circulation, and to remove dirt.

To assist in creating the preferred cut, style and technique.

Types of combs :

Extra wide tooth comb: Has wide spacing between the teeth and large size and diameter of each individual tooth.
Wide tooth comb: teeth are spaced well apart.
Medium tooth comb: teeth are closer together in comparison to the wide tooth combs.
Fine tooth comb: Teeth are very close together. There are various degrees of spacing for "fine" teeth.
Styling or Cutting combs: Designed with a fine half and a wide half. The wide half is much wider than the fine half.
Tail and Pin Tail combs: Tails are used to part and make sections, then the comb is inverted to comb the section of hair. The main difference between a tail and pin tail comb is that a pin tail has a metal tail.
Backcombing (Teasing) combs: Teasing comb has alternating teeth that are two distinct lengths. A long tooth followed by shorter long tooth.
 Hair Pick: has loose teeth.

Choosing the right comb :

Selecting the right comb for your hair care regimen, depends on group of factors like the desired cut or style, the desired technique (ex: highlighting or foiling) and the hair type and length.
Extra wide tooth comb is suitable for all hair types.
Extra wide tooth comb is suitable for combing and detangling wet or dry hair while preventing hair breakage. also works perfectly as a shower comb.
Wide tooth comb is suitable for all hair textures. It can detangle wet or dry hair.
Medium tooth comb brings the hair strands closer together, yet not as much as a fine tooth comb.
Fine tooth comb brings the hair strands closer together, closer than in medium tooth comb.
Medium and fine tooth combs should only be used after using an extra wide or wide tooth comb if the hair is very thick or curly hair.
Styling or cutting combs helps to smooth and bring the hair strands together when working with small, individual sections. Also they can be used when using roller set.
Tail and Pin Tail combs are used for parting and sectioning the hair.
Pin tail comb has a metal tail used for foil highlighting.
Backcombing (Teasing) combs are used for backcombing or to create the appearance of increased hair volume by creating tangles to increase the volume of the hair on the head.
Backcombing (Teasing) comb produces extensive hair damage because the cuticle is lifted and sometimes removed. If it is not performed correctly, it can cause serious damage to the hair.
Hair Pick is is primarily used on very curly hair and for kinky African hair styles.

Combing wet hair:

Combing the hair when it's wet requires delicate and gentle handling since combing wet hair using the wrong method can be very damaging.
To prevent hair damaging, customers should be informed:
After you shampoo and/or condition your hair, do not towel dry your hair completely. Leave your hair damp

Apply a leave-in conditioner. The leave-on conditioner will help lubricate the hair and allow the comb to glide easily.
Take sections of your hair and comb the sections with an extra wide or wide tooth comb depending on your hair type.
Start combing at the bottom half of each section and work your way up towards the scalp. Make sure your hair is smooth from root to tip.
After using the wide tooth comb, move down to a medium, thin, tail or cutting comb.
If you come across tangled hair when using either comb, go back up to the extra wide or wide tooth comb to gently loosen the tangle. Then come back to the medium or fine tooth comb to finish smoothing the hair. Use a fine tooth comb according to your hair thickness and the section sizes you make.
Don't go too fine though unless you are working with very small and thin sections.
